This Spin Instructor Just Created Your Perfect Workout Playlist

March 11, 2019

By: Sarah McGill

Sarah McGill (@sarahfmcgill on Instagram) is a marketing coordinator in the natural & organic food industry by day and an indoor cycling instructor by night. She’s obsessed with all things wellness, beauty and Bravo TV. Here, she offers 4 tips to help create the perfect workout playlist.

We can all agree that music can make or break a good workout exercise. That’s why as an indoor cycling instructor, I take my time creating new playlists for each class to provide an energizing, motivating, and fun playlist that will make my riders want to come back for more. So, whether you are a fellow fitness instructor or just looking for a way to boost your workout playlist, consider these tips for curating the perfect mix.

Remember: Motivation Is Key

When it comes to music for your workout playlist the most important part is finding music that motivates you. This could be EDM, hip-hop, country, showtunes, rock, or whatever genre you feel in the mood to listen to that day. Your playlist will really depend on how you want to feel during your workout. Are you looking for a heart pumping playlist to carry you through that lifting session or are you wanting an invigorating vibe to finish out that run? Whatever it may be, find what speaks to you and add it to your playlist.

Be All About That Beat

In my classes we ride to the rhythm of the beat, so I make sure to find songs that are fun and have a tempo that riders can feel. My favorite part of any class is when the bass drops and the intensity of the room turns up a few notches! Some of my favorite artists with awesome beats are Kygo, Tiesto, or any old school hip-hop artists.

Always Curate Themed Playlists

You can never go wrong with sticking to a theme for your workout. It’s a great way to build excitement and do something different! It’s especially fun to pair two artists or genres up against each other. My favorite themed playlists are Cardi B vs. Nicki Minaj, EDM vs. Hip-Hop, Boy Bands vs. Girl Groups, and Pop vs. Rock. Get creative with it and watch your workout undergo the ultimate transformation (in the best way!)

Keep Your Cooldown in Mind

Recovering from an intense workout is a step that many people overlook, but it’s still very necessary. It allows for time to reconnect with your breath, stretch out your muscles, and calm the mind. Plus, it lessens the risk of injury. A few of my favorite “cooldown” song artists include George Ezra, Dan + Shay, and Cimorelli.
