If you consider yourself a big Vital Proteins® fan, chances are you’ve tried our hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides, which happens to be the first-ever product we introduced to our now-expansive lineup. But did you know we also offer our fan-favorite collagen product in the form of collagen pills, in addition to collagen powder?

While we love these options, we also recognize this comes with questions. So we're taking a stab at answering your more pressing ones — what is the best form of collagen to take? How many collagen pills should I consume? Etc. – in an effort to keep you informed on what option is best for you. Scroll on to get the scoop.

What Is Collagen?

First things first: What is collagen?

Collagen is the building block of our bodies, which includes skin, hair, nails, bones and joints.** One of its most important functions is to keep our bones and connective tissues in working condition. Through our connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and bones, collagen provides these parts with their strength, structure and elasticity.

Our bodies cannot synthesize enough collagen on their own, especially as we age, and diets today contain minimal collagen. That's why we recommend introducing it to your diet — á la Vital Proteins® products — to help you both look and feel your best, all with minimally-processed, clean label ingredients.

When it comes to products, Collagen Peptides is one of the most versatile products we offer because it's flavorless, odorless and easily soluble in hot and cold liquids and foods. Take a look below for some of our other products.

What Do I Need To Know About Collagen Supplements?

As any Vital Proteins fan knows, our lineup includes a diverse range of products from our skin-saving Beauty Collagen™ to our Beef Gelatin, which is easily soluble in hot liquids (unlike our OG hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides, which is soluble in both hot and cold liquids.) While our collagen products all do share the same goal – to help support stronger hair, skin, nails, and joints** – some of them also contain individual functional ingredients that set them apart from the rest.

For example, if you want to add a little flavor to your smoothie while still upping your daily collagen intake, we recommend reaching for one of our flavored Collagen Peptides: Dark Chocolate Blackberry Collagen PeptidesVanilla Collagen Peptides & Mixed Berry Collagen PeptidesOur Pescatarian-friendly Marine Collagen powder is sourced from wild-caught whitefish. For when you’re craving a dreamy treat that helps promote a restful night’s sleep,** whip up a Blueberry Moon Milk Collagen Latte™ that contains 10g of bone broth collagen per serving, melatoninGABA and magnesium. With 10g of collagen and 3g of sugar or less per serving, our Collagen Water™ is here to help you reach your hydration goals on the go. The list goes on!

In terms of why choose Vital Proteins in the first place, get educated with this post on the Vital difference. From transparency to quality to clean label ingredients, whichever supplement you pick, you're left with premium options.

What Is The Best Form Of Collagen To Take?

While we'd like to give one direct answer, in short, it all comes down to personal preference. Some people like to add their collagen powder to their favorite beverages, breakfast foods or desserts. And while adding a scoop or two of our Collagen Peptides to coffee is one of the most popular ways to take collagen, it isn’t the only method. Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Capsules (aka collagen pills) are for those who’d rather not add collagen powder to their drinks or foods.

Aside from usage, the main difference between the two is that the collagen pills come in capsules, which are made of two ingredients: gelatin and water. There are no preservatives, additives, or excipients in these capsules. They both aid in promoting healthy hair, skin, nails and joints, however.**

How Many Collagen Pills Should I Take?

For collagen capsules, we recommend taking 6 capsules with 8 oz. of water. When using collagen powder, we suggest adding 1-2 scoops to food (like sweets or sauces) or beverages (like smoothies or water) to give you the boost you need to support healthy hair, skin, nails and joints.** Note: The powder is easily digested and soluble in cold or hot liquids.

What Collagen Product Should I Take?

Whether you are an athlete or a student, a yoga guru or a parent, we have a variety of collagen products, in pill and powder form, catered to every person, mood and lifestyle. Discovering which one may be a fit for you is ultimately a personal preference, but this flowchart may be a helpful starting point.

From there, we'd advise you to head on over to our Collagen Calculator to get a customized recommendation on how much collagen to add to your regimen. Enjoy!
