How A Dermatologist Washes Her Face Every Day

Sticking to an effective skincare routine is a must year-round. Implementing a new beauty regimen at the start of a new season, however, is always a difficult transition that may require some backup. That’s exactly why we enlisted the help of board-certified dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, FAAD, at SkinSafe Dermatology and Skin Care. Dr. Shainhouse believes that every skincare routine – no matter how extensive – deserves a healthy foundation aka a fresh, clean face.

Why Washing Your Face Is So Important

You’re probably thinking, “Why is there a section dedicated to washing your face?” It may seem self-explanatory but ridding your skin of the day’s pollution and accumulated oils is so important, we just had to mention it (again). According to Dr. Shainhouse, washing your face is meant to serve as a refreshing rinse that removes pore-clogging bacteria as well as a preventative measure taken to treat or avoid blemishes.

Now, on to the fun stuff! Get an exclusive look at the steps Dr. Shainhouse takes to properly cleanse her face. Plus, the skincare products she likes to use to achieve a blank slate.

How Dr. Shainhouse Washes Her Face

I like to use Trader Joe’s All-in-One Facial Cleanser or Giovanni Eco Chic Skin Care D:Rox System Purifying Facial Cleanser in the mornings and in the evenings in the spring/summer/fall. For cooler, drier winter weather, I often switch to a creamy cleanser, like Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Creamy Wash or Dove Bar for Sensitive Skin at least once a day to help maintain my protective skin barrier.

If I’m wearing a full face of makeup, I’ll use a micellar wipe first, and then rinse off immediately (they tend to sting my sensitive skin); I use Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes for Sensitive Skin, Simple Micellar Wipes, or Trader Joe’s Micellar Wipes. In the cooler, drier winter, I might use a cleansing oil to remove oil-based makeup, followed by my cleanser.

Once a week, I like to use a fruit enzyme mask to help exfoliate superficial dead skin cells and unclog pores. I like Alba Botanica Goodand Clean Fruit Acid Detox Fusion Pore Minimizing Mini Peel.
