We’re getting really serious about reaching our fitness goals in 2019. While squeezing in a challenging workout at least three times a week is encouraged, we could be doing a little bit more to optimize our gym visits.
Luckily, we have these celebrity trainers to guide us through it all with their non-workout tips. You’ll want to keep this expert advice in your back pocket … or, you know, your gym bag.
Investing in your fitness journey doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Kirsch, most famously known for working with Jennifer Lopez and Kate Upton, recommends purchasing low-cost (and versatile) gear to supplement your total-body workouts. A stability ball, medicine ball, hand weights and an exercise mat are on his must-buy list.
As the famous saying goes, abs are made in the kitchen. You can train hard but if your diet still mainly consists of junk food, you won’t experience many changes. Heather Marr, a trainer with an A-list roster of supermodel-clients, shared her clean eating meal plan with Lively. A few notable meals: Chicken and veggie stir fry and chili. Yum!
We get it: Taking mirror selfies and posting them on Instagram practically proves you got your workout in. But according to Elzomor, who’s trained Ashley Graham and Michael B. Jordan, practicing mindfulness at the gym is what matters most. “I was able to get more out of every single rep, simply because of the unwavering focus I had throughout my workouts,” the N.Y.C.-based trainer tells Lively of putting his phone away. He adds: “I got stronger, not just physically, but mentally as well. Life is about being in the moment, regardless of what you are doing.”
The best way to get in shape, according to Shakira and Kelly Ripa’s trainer? Listen to upbeat music during your sweat sesh. The AKT trainer shared some of her picks, which ranges from “Work” by Iggy Azalea to “Mi Gente” by J. Balvin. “Music becomes the heartbeat of the workout and pushes everyone to keep going!” she tells Lively.
